Baby blankets are one of the most gifted items that are usually given to expecting moms as a blanket for your baby girl can serve many different purposes (other than being super cute): from a receiving or swaddle blanket to wrap your newborn in, to a cover to protect your baby from the cold, sun or wind, or a cover for the ground when you out at the park.
Sometimes the blankets are gifted as new blankets or ones that have been passed down through generations. And it’s not surprise really. They can also be perfect pacifier alternatives if you are tying to get rid of or you don’t want to use a pacifier, as they provide comfort and safety to your child.
However, there are so many choices out there it’s hard to understand what product is best to buy or to add to your registry. So, whether you are expecting or you want to buy a blanket to one of your friend who’s expecting a baby girl, I have gathered here a list of the best baby girl blankets out there.
I am also highlighting here everything that you need to know to choose the perfect baby blanket for your baby girl, such as considerations on material or size. Or what baby blankets are best depending on your budget.

When can your Baby Girl Sleep with a Blanket?
While a blanket might be the first thing that people want to buy to you and possibly the first thing you are going to add to your hospital bag checklist or newborn baby checklist, it’s important to remember that loose blankets shouldn’t really be used for when babies are sleeping until they become a bit older.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) actually recommends keeping loose bedding out of the sleeping area for at least the first 12 months of your baby’s life to avoid suffocation. This recommendation is based on data around infant sleep deaths and guidelines for reducing the risk of SIDS.
You can find lots of information on how to dress your baby for sleep here, both to keep them warm and safe. However, as a general guideline:
- Before your infant starts to roll (usually around 3-4 months), they can either sleep with a swaddle blanket or a sleeping bag/sack.
- Once your baby starts to roll a swaddle becomes unsafe, so you can transition your baby to a sleeping bag/sack, which allows their arms to be free and for them to move around easily without getting cold.
- When your baby can put a blanket back on themselves (usually closer to 2 years old), then they are ready to transition to a blanket / duvet.
A lot of people (midwifes, pediatricians, sleep consultants, etc.) recommend a swaddle for the first few weeks of life. However, know that every child is different and not all children like to be swaddled! My kids, for example, never really liked it other than for the first few days after birth.

The Different Types of Blankets
There are also different types of blankets out there that serve slightly different purposes, so it’s important for you to understand what these are to know what you want to buy. In fact, most parent end up having a combination of different blankets.
- Receiving and Swaddle Blankets: these are very similar and often used to refer to the same thing – a blanket that’s used to swaddle your newborn in. However, in theory, receiving blankets are designed in a square or rectangular shape, whereas swaddle blankets are usually smaller and with two wings on the sides to make swaddling your baby easier.
- Wearable Blankets: this term is sometimes used for sleeping bags or sleep sacks, so I won’t include them in this article. If you want to find out more about these, you can check out my lists of best baby sleep sacks for summer and for winter.
- Traditional Blankets: these are usually quite large rectangular or square blankets used to keep baby warm and not with the purpose to swaddle your baby.

The Different Blanket Materials
One last thing I want to mention before I dive into the best baby blankets for girls is the different kind of materials/fabrics that could be used for baby blankets, as I think this is quite important for you to know. Mainly because babies, especially infants, can’t regulate their body temperature very well and can get cold or overheat quite easily.
Also, babies have sensitive skin, so lots of parents prefer to look for blankets that are organic or chemical-free to minimize the risk of irritation.
That said, baby blankets can be made from a wide variety of fabrics, such as cotton, muslin, wool or different types of polyester (fleece, minky, plush). What option is best comes down to your climate and whether you prefer a natural fabric (cotton, muslin, bamboo or wool) or you are happy with a synthetic fabric.
In general:
- Cotton, bamboo and cotton muslin: these are light and breathable materials that are perfect for warmer months or if used as swaddlse or receiving blankets. They can be machine washed and are safe for baby’s sensitive skin.
- Polyester: all forms of polyester (minky, fleece, etc.) are very warm and soft to the touch. However, they are not breathable fabrics at all, so are best suited for colder months and/or when going out for a walk in the stroller. Polyester is also not a natural fabric, so not ideal if you are looking for something natural on baby’s skin.
- Wool and Merino Wool: wool is a very warm material perfect for winter months, but merino wool is actually one of the best all-year round fabrics as it can keep baby both cool in hotter months and warm in colder ones. The main disadvantage of wool is that it’s very delicate and, even though it doesn’t need to be washed often, it usually requires to be washed by hand or on a gentle wash cycle.

Let’s start with receiving blankets for baby girls. These two options are made of polyester, so not a natural material, but the fabric is very stretchy, making them the perfect solution if you are looking at a square or rectangular blanket to swaddle your baby girl in.

This No products found. is one of my favorites baby girl swaddles, mainly because of how cute the pattern is and because of its price. It’s super affordable, and the quality is still good, unless you are looking for something that’s 100% cotton or similar.
It’s also of a generous size, definitely enough to swaddle babies that are 0-3 months, and to be able to be used for multiple purposes, such as a nursing or stroller cover.

2) Pink Floral Baby Girl Blanket
What I love about this Floral Baby Girl Blanket is the fact that it can be personalized with your baby’s name on it and that you can choose the material. It can be the perfect gift for a friend who’s expecting a little girl!
You can choose between all these different options:
- Swaddle: ultralight, breathable and very stretchy, perfect for swaddling
- Lightweight jersey: lightweight, breathable and also stretchy, perfect for as an everyday blanket
- Plush fleece: super soft plush fleece, which is perfect to keep baby warm in winter
- Plush sherpa: super soft plush fleece, backed with a grey or pink sherpa, that your baby will also love when cold outside
Unfortunately, this is still not the best option if you are looking to wrap your baby into something natural and organic, as it’s made of synthetic material. But if that’s not a problem for you and you are just looking for something super cute and snuggly, you might like this option.

Baby Girl Swaddle Blankets
These, on the other hand, are baby girl swaddle blankets, made of 100% cotton and with wings that fold around baby to make swaddling so much easier.
3) The Peanutshell Baby Girl Swaddle Blanket
If you are looking for lots of pink, then you might like these Pink Baby Girl Blankets. They are perfect if you are looking for a swaddle blanket, but are worried about all the folding involved with a traditional receiving blanket!
These swaddles have a particular shape that allows you to secure your baby with adjustable fabric wings, which fasten securely with Velcro to create the perfect fit. The swaddles are also soft, being made with 100% cotton, and they come in two different sizes, so you can choose the best one for your baby.
The main con is the quality of the fabric, which is quite thin, so not ideal if you are looking for something particularly cuddly or of superior quality. They are very cheap though, so the quality reflects the price.

This Baby Swaddle is very similar to the previous one, though you might prefer it to the other one if you are looking a color that’s not just pink for a girl. Plus, it’s got an extra feature that might be a game changer for many parents: a zip at the bottom that allows you to change your baby’s diaper without having to open the swaddle and wake baby up!
I personally know how convenient it is to be able to change your baby’s diaper without having to take the swaddle or a sleeping bag off. It might not be enough to save you from a diaper blowout, but will definitely do the trick for a simple diaper change in the middle of the night, particularly if it’s winter.
They are made of 100% cotton and close with a Velcro like the one above. One of the main con is that they seem to shrink a little in the wash, so it can be a bit hard to get the Velcro in the right place after washing them the first time (it’s fine once baby starts stretching it out after a few days).

The main thing that would put me off from this blanket is the fact that it’s made of synthetic instead of natural material. But that might not be an issue for you.

Baby Girl Blankets Perfect for Winter
I have added these baby girl blankets towards the end of the list because I find these to be perfect for colder temperatures in winter. Merino in particular is one of my favorite materials for all year round: it has an incomparable ability to maintain a comfortable micro-climate between body and bedding, keeping you baby cool when it is hot and warm when it is cold.
My daughters had both Merino blankets and Merino sleep sacks when sleeping and I was always so happy with the Merino products.
